How to Identify Your Personal Values?

Published by Dominika on

As a Personal, Leadership and Executive Coach, I appreciate the power of values. In fact, I always start the coaching process by helping the client to identify his/ her personal values. I’ve noticed that my clients experience greater fulfillment when they live by their values.

Why Values are so Important

Values highlight what we stand for and help us identify our priorities in life. They guide our decisions, behavior and provide a personal code of conduct.

Once you take time to identify your personal values, you will realize what is most important for you. You have probably heard a million times that you should be true to yourself. Discovering your values is a great place to start.

“When your values are clear to you, making decisions become easier.”
– Roy E. Disney

How to Identify your Personal Values

Most of us don’t know our values and we might not know what is most important to us. Instead of looking for the answer inside us, we tend to look for ‘the right answer’ in the outside world – our society, culture and social media.

You may decide to start the self-discovery process with a qualified coach or you can try to do it on your own, remember to be honest and patient.

Take a pen and paper, mute your phone, and cut distractions.

Here are a few tips on how to start:

1. Be Open Minded

2. Create Your List of Personal Values

If you’re not familiar with working with values, you can scan the list of values to get an idea of available options, but it’s important to say that values are discovered and revealed, not just selected from the list based on what sounds the best.
Think what’s most important in your life? When your basic needs are satisfied, what must you have to feel fulfilled?

In the beginning, your list of values may be quite long. Try to determine your top personal core values (5-10 is ideal) by answering these questions:

– What values are essential to your life?
– What values represent your primary way of being?
– What values are essential to supporting your inner self?

Integrity is choosing your thoughts and actions based on values rather than personal gain.

3. Create your Value Statements

To make your values more memorable and meaningful, you can create your value statements.

For example, if one of your core values is creativity, your statement may sound: “Creativity: to express myself using visual art and writing, to stay open-minded and think outside of the box.”

4. Organize and Assess

Prioritize the list of your values and assess how well you’re honoring each value by scoring each one on the scale of 1 to 10, where 10 represents full satisfaction and living the value.
Assess your values regularly, ideally once a month.

5. Use Your Values to Make Decisions

Being familiar with your own values gives you more clarity and helps you make decisions.

“Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do.”
-Elvis Presley
